I Feel and Look Much Younger

When people find out that I am in my 40s, I think most of them are surprised for a number of reasons. First, I know I don’t look my age at all. A lot of people think that I am in my late 20s, which pleases me to not end. Also, I have more energy than a lot of people half my age. I know that we all have to get older, but we don’t have to let that be a negative thing. I take GenF20 Plus on a daily basis, and it allows me to look and feel much younger than I am.

I know that I have good genes, but that alone is not what helps me. I give a lot of credit to the HGH supplements that I take.

How to Control Grass Allergies in Dogs

Your dog’s grass allergies are his immune system overreacting to airborne grass pollens. This allergy type is an inhalant allergy, or atopy, the second most common type of dog allergy. Your dog’s overreactive immune system is trying to rid itself of something it incorrectly considers dangerous. Consult your veterinarian if you suspect your dog has atopy — without treatment, seasonal allergies can morph into a year-round problem and additional health problems.

Signs of a Grass Pollen AllergyThe most common symptoms of a grass pollen allergy in dogs are excessive scratching and licking. In particular, dogs tend to lick, chew and bite their paws, which may become swollen. Other symptoms closely mimic the human allergic response: itching, sneezing, watery eyes, snoring and digestive upset. A dog’s scratching and licking will typically cause hair loss, creating uncomfortable “hot spots” on the skin. These can become infected. If you notice symptoms only during certain times of the year, odds are your dog has a seasonal pollen allergy. Your vet can perform allergy tests to narrow down the exact pollen types.

Preventative MeasuresCut your grass close so seed heads don’t form. Vacuum your dog’s living areas and wash his bedding frequently. Bathe him at least weekly to remove pollens and relieve his itching; ask your vet about shampoos that won’t irritate or dry his skin. Don’t schedule vaccinations when your dog’s allergies are at his worst, as these stimulate his already overactive immune system.

Since your dog’s moist paws attract pollen that accumulates in his living space, soak his feet nightly in a solution of povidone iodine and warm water, mixed to the color of tea. Doing so also removes toxins such as pesticides. An alternative to the iodine solution is a solution of a half-cup of Epsom salt per 1 gallon of warm water.

Traditional TreatmentsYour veterinarian may recommend an over-the-counter antihistamine to give your dog relief from symptoms. If this and diligent pollen-reduction measures aren’t effective, your vet may recommend allergy shots that should help your pet develop a resistance to grass pollen. Your vet will perform an allergy test to identify the exact pollen causing the problem. In severe cases, your vet may recommend a cortisone shot or the drug cyclosporine to treat his skin issues.

Natural TreatmentsAsk your vet to recommend an appropriate dose of a fatty acid supplement that will give your dog relief from itchy skin. Fish oils such as krill, salmon, tuna and anchovy are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Dr. Karen Becker of Mercola’s Healthy Pets website advocates coconut oil can enhance fish oil’s effectiveness. Look for topical over-the-counter remedies containing aloe vera for skin relief. A grain-free diet can quell your dog’s inflammatory response; ask a holistic vet to recommend other naturally derived substances such as quercetin, bromelain and papain. These remedies are found in retail pharmacies but the dosage must be prescribed for your dog’s weight and circumstances.

Keeping Away Pets From Fire Ants Attack

Pet owners should prepare now for the springtime invasion of fire ants — especially if animals are kept outdoors.

Unlike many backyard pests, red imported fire ants are capable of delivering multiple, venomous stings that create a serious health threat for family pets. Injuries include a burning sensation from the poison injected into the skin, swelling, lesions, fluid buildup in the lungs and, in some rare cases, blindness.

Animals can suffer allergic reactions to fire ants just like people. Newborn animals are particularly at risk. Caged animals such as rabbits, hamsters and even birds are more likely to be harmed because they can’t escape if fire ants enter the enclosure. Some veterinarians have to treat their kennel areas and around the clinics because fire ants attack recuperating animals.

“Fire ants are dangerous because they live where pets sleep, eat, run and play,” says Bryan Gooch of Bayer Environmental Science. “As fire ants continue to spread across the United States, we encourage all pet owners to seek professional help to protect their pets from these dangerous and aggressive creatures.”

Texas A&M University’s Texas Imported Fire Ant Education Program offers the following tips for homeowners who want to safeguard their pets:

* Survey the area and inspect your property to determine whether there is an infestation, or call a lawn care professional (many offer free inspections). If one or more mounds are present, your property should be treated — especially if you keep pets outside.

* Fire ants are more likely to attack young and caged animals and usually sting body parts with little or no hair, such as the eyes, ears and stomach first. Open sores, wounds and areas of diseased skin are also often targeted. Pets with these conditions should be kept indoors.

* If fire ants attack your pet, carefully and quickly remove the pet from the area and remove any fire ants from your pet. Do not attempt to spray ants off with a water hose because they will hang on with their jaws and sting the animal repeatedly.

Last but not least, investigate ways to safeguard family pets and property from the invasion of these aggressive creatures.

One of the biggest problems pet owners face is fire ants getting into pet food. For pets that are fed outside, this can be a daily occurrence. Whole bags of food can be infested. The problem then becomes what to do with a bowl or bag of pet food full of fire ants. Simply putting the bag in the trash does not work and could cause a colony to migrate closer to the source of food.

“Infested food must be discarded,” says Charles Barr, a fire ant specialist and principal of Barr Research and Consulting in Bryan, Texas. “For the penny pinchers among us, putting the bowl or bag in the freezer for several hours will kill the ants and preserve the pet food.”

Poor Dental Hygiene

Would you go days, weeks or even years without brushing your teeth? The thought of a plaque-filled, bacteria-laden mouth and the stench of bad breath that would result makes most people squirm in disgust at the sheer thought of it. Yet, that is exactly what is happening in your pet’s mouth at this very moment if you’re not cleaning their teeth on a regular basis.

The Link Between Poor Oral Hygiene and Heart Disease

The long-term impact to a lackadaisical attitude about your pet’s oral hygiene could ultimately compromise their overall health. According to a study by Professor Larry Glickman at Purdue University, there is a link between the severity of gum disease in dogs and their risk for some types of heart disease, including cardiomyopathy and endocarditis. In some cases, the increased incidence of heart disease was 6 times higher in dogs with severe gum disease than in those without it.

While Dr. Glickman’s study didn’t address the oral hygiene of cats and its potential link to heart disease, the number of felines with dental disease is cause for concern as well. According to an American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS) study reported by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), 70 percent of all cats and nearly 80 percent of all dogs have dental disease by age three. By adopting a routine of brushing your pet’s teeth when they are young, you can help reduce these alarming statistics and ultimately improve your pet’s long-term health.

About Dental Disease

Similar to periodontal disease in humans, gum disease in dogs and cats is the result of untreated plaque and tartar build-up. The bacteria in the plaque and tartar causes inflammation and infection, which can travel into the bloodstream and lead to more serious health problems. Pet owners often don’t do anything about their pet’s oral hygiene until the tartar build-up gets severe enough that it requires professional cleaning by a veterinarian. This will likely require that the veterinarian anesthetize your pet, which has its own inherent risks not to mention an impact on the pet owner’s wallet.

Recommended Dental Products

While the best home remedy for good dental hygiene is brushing your pet’s teeth, you may also want to consider giving your pet specially made treats and foods designed to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy. There are also new dental care water additives on the market that you can add to your pet’s water bowl to help fight plaque and bad breath. Don’t rely on claims made on the packaging for pet dental care products; these are just marketing tools used to sell more products and often have no scientific basis. Your best bet is to use these VOHC approved products , which have met strict protocols established by the Veterinary Oral Health Council.

A Word of Warning About Toothpaste

Never use human toothpaste or baking soda to clean your pet’s teeth. Pets can’t spit out toothpaste like humans and according to the AAHA, the foaming agents in human toothpaste can cause stomach upset in pets. Human toothpaste can be toxic to your pet if it contains Xylitol, a human sweetener, which the ASPCA lists as one of the most dangerous poisons for pets. Pet toothpastes are not only designed specifically so pets can safely swallow all the ingredients, but they are also flavored in appealing pet-friendly varieties such as beef and chicken.

Basic Nutrition for Dogs

Just like ourselves, our pets need a regular supply of food in order to stay healthy. The foods that we eat contain components which are involved in the very complex processes that take place in the body’s cells, provide the building blocks for growth and supply energy to keep the body warm.

Our pets have several requirements that have to be met by the diet that we provide:

Like a torch needs batteries to supply the energy to keep the bulb lit, every cell in the body needs energy, providing the power for each cell to function. Energy is used up every time the body performs muscular work, such as moving or even breathing. The most efficient source of energy in the diet is fat, which is quickly converted by the body into usable energy. Carbohydrates and proteins are also sources of energy, but to a smaller extent.

The body can usefully store energy as fatty tissue, and in times of shortage these will be used up – hence the weight loss when on a diet.

Proteins are composed of amino acids, which are the basic building blocks of life. Proteins are essential components of all living cells, both in structure and function, and animals require protein in their diet to provide amino acids that their bodies cannot synthesise in sufficient quantity.

An increased intake of protein is required during periods of growth, pregnancy and lactation. Consideration should also be given to the quality of protein and its digestibility.

Too much protein in the diet can lead to its conversion by the body into fat, or in a growing animal in too swift a growth of muscle structure, which may lead to problems later in life.

Carbohydrates provide the body with a source of energy, which may be converted into body fat. This food group includes both simple sugars (such as glucose) as well as complex sugars (e.g. starch) which consist of chains of simple sugars.

Dietary fats are composed of combinations of fatty acids, which are involved in many aspects of health, from the cellular level upwards. They also provide the easiest form of concentrated energy in the diet, as well as giving an acceptable texture and ‘mouthfeel’ to the food.

An animal cannot survive for longer than a few days, or even hours without water. There is a continual loss of water through skin, urine, faeces and breathing, and this must be replaced either as fluid or through the breakdown of food ingested. Daily water requirement will depend on many factors, including temperature, activity and type of food given as part of the diet. It is important therefore, that adequate water is provided in the diet.

Fibre or Roughage

These materials generally pass through the gut without providing specific nutrients, merely helping to regularise bowel movements and managing constipation or diarrhoea. Fibre in the diet is usually of plant origin – indigestible polysaccharides such as cellulose, lignin and pectin

Minerals and Vitamins

A number of minerals have been discovered to play a part in the regulation of body processes, the requirements for some being greater than others. Only very small amounts are needed however, and excess can sometimes result in ill health, as these can be toxic in high doses.

Vitamins help to regulate the body processes. Most cannot be synthesised and therefore must be provided in the diet. Interestingly, unlike humans there is no dietary requirement for vitamin C in most pets, as they can synthesise it from glucose.

Dietary supplements

As long as an animal is being fed a balanced and complete diet, and a good quality feed should provide for this, then there should be no need for dietary supplements, unless prescribed by a veterinary surgeon for a particular medical purpose. Where the animal’s food is cooked at home from raw ingredients, then care should be taken to ensure that the diet is balanced with regard to the major and minor nutrient requirements of the animal.

How to incorporate your fitness routine with your dog routine

Being a dog owner is a big responsibility; you have to worry about their health and wellness just as you do your own. If you have a dog then I am certain you have experienced the disappointed look from your veterinarian if your pup is overweight. They inform you of the issues it can cause with their knees, back, and just overall well being. If you haven’t experienced this, then you should pat yourself on the back because even myself, and avid dog lover and dog rescuer, has had my hand slapped from time to time.

Recently, I was the victim of a hand-slap by my beloved vet regarding my excessively large bloodhound, Mumford. The vet informed me that he was 15 pounds overweight (which in dog weight is the equivalent of like 30 lbs of human weight!) and that he had to lose it by his next appointment, which was only 30 days away! My jaw hit the drool covered floor.

I left that day and decided that if my best friend, Mums, had to lose weight, then I would too! I looked at his paws and thought, “Let’s go for a run!” I looked at my feet and realized that my flip flops would not suffice for this type of activity. Come to think of it, none of the shoes in my dog-hair covered closet could actually get the job done, either. Being a Florida girl and all, we don’t really require anything other than flip flops. I dropped what I was doing, I bought some sneakers and new workout clothes, and began our new workout routine that same day.

It was easy getting him to lose the weight; I cut back his food supply, and increased his exercise time by hanging out at the dog parks, walking the beach, and playing in the backyard. In changing his daily routine also changed mine, and we both lost weight! I never thought my best friend would become my best workout buddy! It was easy and actually fun, plus when we had the weigh in at his next vet appointment, we both lost our goal of 15 lbs!

I share this story because many people think it’s hard to lose weight and live a healthy lifestyle. The truth is, if you own a dog, all it takes is a little added effort (and possibly a reprimanding from your vet) to motivate both you and your pup to change your life! Start with your feet and work your way up. If you don’t have a reliable pair of running shoes, go get some! Even if you don’t plan on running, you still need something comfortable and supportive (much like your dog is to you!) covering your feet. From there, you can conquer the world, one dog park at a time!

Pet Insurance Policy Points To Know And Consider

We know that it is very important to have insurance policies for each and every member of the family. But more often than not we see these insurance policies being extended to pets too. In fact it makes for sound financial planning in the long run since you never know when your furry friend might fall sick or have an accident.

But before finalising on an insurance policy for your furry pet, it is very important to go through the Pet insurance reviews available on the internet. These reviews will help you get a rough idea of what can be and should be expected from a pet insurance policy.

Some important points to keep in mind

Some very important points to consider before selecting an insurance policy are

  • The annual insurance premium on an insurance policy taken out for a mongrel is cheaper than that taken out for a dog of pedigree.
  • Pet insurance for dogs is far more expensive than those which provide coverage for cats.
  • A straightforward pet insurance policy should automatically provide coverage for all types of veterinary bills as well as minor surgeries performed on the pet.
  • Insurance policies which provide for all-inclusive plans are more flexible as they generally tend to reimburse:
    • Fees charged by a pet psychologist or
    • Even cancellation charges for dinner reservations getting cancelled due to last minute health problems faced by the pet.
  • Insurance policies providing liability coverage virtually covers all types of health coverage there can be for pets. In fact they even provide coverage for pet owners if their pets
    • Hurt another individual or even
    • Cause damage to another person’s property.
  • Insurance companies generally prefer providing insurance policies for young pets. In fact the following animals are considered to be high risk animals. They include:
    • Pets who have a history for suffering from a lingering sickness and
    • Pets that are above 8 years of age.
  • Insurance policies taken out to cover pets when and if they are lost or get stolen include reimbursement of:
    • Money spent on efforts made to find the pet and
    • A part of the initial cost of the pet in case it is not found even after making several efforts.

With the rise in the popularity of insurance policies for pets, insurance companies are coming up with many new types of policies to attract the pet owner. Hence it is very important for a person in love with his furry friend to go through the Pet insurance reviews thoroughly and avail the best policy for their pets.

Different Dog Breeds, Different Sensitive Period?

A study of three breeds finds differences in the sensitive period, and shows socialization should begin before you even take your puppy home.

Puppies have a sensitive period between 3 and 12-14 weeks old in which they must be socialized. This means positive introductions to new people, dogs, places, etc. If not, they will be fearful as adult dogs. A fascinating new study by Mary Morrow (Ohio State University) et al investigates whether this period is the same for three breeds of dog: Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Yorkshire Terriers, and German Shepherd Dogs.

These breeds make a particularly interesting comparison. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Yorkshire Terrier are both members of the Toy group, although Yorkshire Terriers are still “terriers by nature” according to the breed standard. The German Shepherd is a Herding dog, and the GSD puppies were chosen from breeders with international working dog lines.

The results show that Yorkshire Terriers and German Shepherd Dogs have an earlier onset to the sensitive period. This means socialization needs to start in the home of the breeder (or the foster for rescue pups). People are increasingly aware of the importance of socializing puppies when they get them. But before committing to a new pup they should ask the breeder: “What are you doing to begin socialization before I take the puppy home?”

Dr. Joy Pate (Penn State University), one of the authors, says “Socialization is clearly important for all breeds of dog. What our study shows, is that timing of exposure to novelty is not only important, but varies by breed. In breeds with earlier onset of adult patterns of fear-related avoidance behavior (the GSDs and YTs in our study), it is critical that they be exposed to novel experiences earlier than some other breeds. In the case of these two breeds, this means by about 40 days, which is before they have left the breeder.”

“Therefore, development of a confident, emotionally competent animal depends not only on the new owner and trainer, but on the environment of the breeder. Although this is important for all breeds, for those with earlier onset of fear-related behaviors, there is a shorter window to provide necessary stimulation and exposure to novelty.”

She goes on to say, “We think that the important message here is that, while exposure to novelty and ‘socialization’ are necessary for development of stable adults of all breeds, the timing of this critical window is breed-dependent.”

Fear-related avoidance behaviour began at 39.4 days (±1.6) for the German Shepherd, 43.6 (±2.48) for the Yorkshire Terrier, and 54.8 days (±2.74) for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

One potential explanation for the results has to do with neoteny (child- or baby-like features). Of these three breeds, the CKCS is the most neotenous whereas the GSD is closer in appearance to the wolf. In their paper, the scientists say, “Just as dogs and domesticated foxes have longer critical socialization periods than wolves and non-selected foxes respectively, perhaps more neotenous breeds of dog such as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel would also have a longer socialization period.” Further research with more breeds would be needed to confirm this.

Puppies were tested once a week from the age of 4-5 weeks until 10 weeks (or until they went home, if earlier). There were four behavioural tests. The control group puppies experienced the same thing but without the actual test. For example, they were placed in location for the noise test for the same amount of time as the test puppies, but did not experience the loud noise.

Testing took place close to but out of sight and sound of the other puppies in the litter. There were four tests each week: a novel item, being placed on a seesaw, hearing a sudden loud noise, and being put on a step so they would feel like they were on a ledge. The novel item was a toy duck that walked whilst making a noise and shining light from its eyes.

In early testing the puppies did not show fear. For example, in the novel item test, a 31-day-old Yorkshire Terrier puppy stays still while the toy duck marches right up to her. At 38 days, the video shows her back away from the approaching duck and then run to hide behind the human’s legs.

The age of onset of the fear period in GSDs is similar to that found by Ray Coppinger  in earlier work. There were differences between the three breeds in the proportion of puppies that responded fearfully. From 6 weeks old, there were also differences in mobility. Most of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels did not begin testing until 5 weeks old because they did not respond at 4 weeks. The breeders said that CKCS develop later and open their eyes later than other breeds.

Saliva was also collected from the puppies and tested for cortisol, although only the GSDs and CKC Spaniels took part in this because of difficulties getting samples from the Yorkshire Terriers. Cortisol could be detected in the saliva from 4 weeks old. Among the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies, changes in cortisol from before to after the test were greatest amongst the puppies that had a fear response.

98 puppies took part in the study (33 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels from 7 litters, 33 German Shepherd Dogs from 5 litters, and 32 Yorkshire Terriers from 9 litters). Eleven breeders participated and the puppies were tested at their homes. Among each breed, 14 puppies were controls and the remainder took part in the experimental condition.

This study provides important confirmation that breed differences in the sensitive period exist. Although we still have much to learn about socialization, the implication is very clear – it needs to start early.

Fleas and ticks A danger to you and your pet

Fleas and ticks are the scourge of your animal’s and families’ wellness and love of existence. The irritation caused by these pests can make your pet uncomfortable. But there is more than misery that these annoying nuisances can cause; they also pass on disease to you and your household.

Fleas can make their habitation anywhere. Your domicile is like a welcome mat to fleas as fleas can multiply vigorously at room temperature. Fleas can exist for a drawn-out period without a food source.

As they journey from area to area, fleas and ticks may pick up an malady from one animal and infect you and your four-legged friend. The first line of defense against an infestation is flea and tick protection. Frontline spray for pets is a very low-cost, easy-to-use way to aid in keeping things under control. It can be used on your pet and their bedding. Frontline spray can be applied your companion as early as eight weeks no matter what size or species they are. No longer do you have to pay money for multiple products, one size fits all. You can even use it on horses for tick protection.

As previously noted, they are not just a nuisance but a risk to you and your pets. Here are a few of the diseases they can carry to your happy home.

Cat Scratch Fever: This illness can be transmitted a couple of ways. If your feline has been bitten by a flea that has ingested the blood of an infected creature, your feline can also become infected. If your infected cat scratches or bites you, then you may be exposed to the disease. Another way is if an infected flea leaves behind waste in your cat’s fur and you rub your cat contaminating your hands, later you wipe your eyes again you have opened yourself to infection.

Tapeworms: Horrible creatures that can be transferred from fleas to pets and humans alike. Your pets would most probable be exposed to this while chewing at fleas and swallowing an infected flea. While the probability of conveyance from your pet to you is low, the risk is still there.

Flea Bite Dermatitis: Causes a rash-like response that is very itchy for both human and animal alike. In animals, it may also lead to hot spots opening the door to secondary infections, while in humans may also cause hives and secondary infections.

Typhus: Fleas that have contact with rodents infected with typhus can also transfer it to your pets. The flea feeds on your pet and leaves waste in their fur. You may be contaminated if you have an open injury that comes into contact with the waste.

Bubonic Plague: Fleas feed on an infected animal that has the plague. The flea bites you, now you are susceptible to the disease. It can also bite on your pets and your pet could infect you.

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever: This is a bacterial contagion caused by the dog tick. This can be a grave and life-threatening disease and affects humans and pets alike.

Lyme Disease and Southern Tick: Lyme disease is caused by the deer tick, the most normal of all tick-related diseases. While the southern tick is caused by the lone star tick. When a human is infected, the bite is normally marked by a bull’s eye. Causes stiff joints in both human and pet along with other ailments if not treated.

Although the risks may be minimal, my family has had personal experiences with three of the above-mentioned diseases. The best offense is invariably a good defense. Frontline spray for pets is a outstanding first line of defense. If you would like more information on this product, please visit us at!

Have You Groomed Your Pet Lately

Do you know the importance of bathing your pet on a regular? Believe it or not, the way a pet is groomed often affects how they feel about themselves (similar to humans). Matted hair and overlong nails makes it hard for them to play, while long hair that falls in their face affects their vision.

Health Problems

Improper pet grooming also leads to certain health issues. A dog or cat that is not groomed on a regular is more likely to contain fleas, ticks, and other common insects. Matted fur can become uncontrollable, which then could lead to having to cut all of your pets hair off. This type of unmanaged hair can also cause dry, itchy skin that is normally uncomfortable to the animal. Dry skin causes pets to scratch at their skin. Scratching can lead to cuts that are prone to infections.

Appearance and Smell

The most obvious reason for regular pet grooming is simply that your animals appearance and smell will be better. No one enjoys the smell of a wet, dirty pet. Their scent can get into clothing and furniture, and make an entire home smell less than great.

Ears and Nails Another aspect of pet grooming is trimming and maintaining nails. This is very important for your pet, especially if they are an inside pet. Their nails grow rapidly and without being cut properly they can grow back into the pads of the animals foot and be extremely painful. Animals that have overgrown nails are less likely to play and get their appropriate exercise as well.

Whether you decide to have your pet professionally groomed or prefer to do it yourself, be sure to make it a regular task. Some animals may object to the process, but once they get used to it they should be fine!

Stop Animal Cruelty on U-Tube

I was watching animal antics on U-Tube-tube recently. You know, dogs, cats. rats and ferrets playing around and doing their tricks. Proud pet owners show them on video because it can all be very amusing and entertaining. You can also get some very useful pet care information from experts.

Imagine my dismay when I saw a video by one sicko pet owner who filmed his ferret killing and eating a live young mouse on a floor in his home.

The mouse was simply tossed in front of the ferret who took its time killing the poor mite and then hauled it away to eat. There was no chase, no thrill, no competition – just a downright bloody spectacle.

At first I was horrified. Then I thought why can this sort of garbage be allowed on U-Tube which is a very public site. Do we accept mentally unbalanced people publicly displaying sickly scenes like this? I’m sure a lot of pet owners like me would not support such actions.

This sicko not only does it with mice and ferrets. He also has other videos on U-Tube, like snakes eating rats.

I mean would you really want to watch that kind of thing? Do you want your young kids to?

I hope the bosses of U-Tube read this and maybe do something about it. I’m all for reality and teaching young people the facts of life but killing creatures for the sake of macabre entertainment is just not on.

What do you think? Do you have an opinion? Let the world know for the sake of our pets as well as the moral aspect.

It’s said we live in a sick society. It seems like that when you witness the killing of pets for entertainment.

Many people are taking many steps to try and live an eco-friendly lifestyle. One area in our lives that is easy to go green in, and often gets overlooked, is our pets. Here are five easy changes you can make to start being a more environmentally friendly pet owner:

Play Green. Make pet toys out of old stuff or buy toys made from recycled materials. Look around your garage; Im sure you have something that will work. Get creative!

Adopt from a shelter. There are more pets than people born every day. Too many and the planet wont be able to sustain the population.

Dont use a lint roller. Instead, use a Fur-Zoff to clean up pet hair. Fur-Zoff is made from recycled materials and lasts forever. Lint rollers waste tons of paper, plastic, and money. A Fur-Zoff is only $9.99 from Fur-Zoff.

We are conveniently located beside ranches and our road is very quiet.

Traffic is not the only concern that we have with the outdoor cats. We habitually have our pets’ data on their tags and we make certain that they always wear collars but the very collars that are supposed to help can be hazardous as well. A petsafe collar is not dangerous for many causes.

Creative Pet dog Training Suggestion

Your pet does not hate you and is acting insane from spite for you. No, it is simply being crazy due to the fact that it hasn’t discovered any various other method for it to act yet. Nonetheless, that is going to change when one discovers the suggestions that are included in this really article.

When training your pet, you may want to always give your pet dog just one order at a time. If you give your pet dog more than one command at the exact same time, your canine will be confused about exactly what order it should follow. This will irritate both of you. By providing your dog only one order at a time, it will better understand your commands which will cause a greater success rate.

Make certain you and your family are constant with your commands. If someone utilizes “down” to tell the canine to get off the couch while another states “off” and a third is letting him lay there, the dog is getting combined signals. It makes it much more tough for him to discover the commands.

When walking your pet on a leash, never keep the leash too tight. A tight leash produces a counter pressure feedback and can trigger the canine to become uptight or agitated. Your pet could then pull, rather than walk correctly on the leash. Being less limiting with your leash hold will permit a more enjoyable walking experience.

Look for causes that could trigger bad habits from your pet. If your pet dog is unexpectedly showing unwanted behaviors, possibly something has changed that day: Has he had the ability to go on a walk or has he been cooped up? Were you gone all day when typically someone is at house? Dogs are animals of consistency and when things alter their behavior can alter as well.

The finest method to prevent your canine from barking excessively, is to make him more comfy with whatever it is he barks at so regularly. Pet dogs bark at anything that scares of threatens them, so if you offer your pet dog that the things of their fear is absolutely nothing to be afraid of, he’ll stop barking.

Dogs and puppies that show play biting behavior can be both aggravating and harmful. Although play biting is a regular pet dog habits, it is essential to instruct your dog that mouthy play is unwanted. When your puppy nips you playfully, make a loud noise and move away, overlooking the puppy. This will teach bite restraint in a manner the puppy understands.

Constantly begin with the physical side of command training and incorporate words after. You can establish a training state of mind with your confidence and body language without saying anything. When your dominance is put in, your canine will reply to this and often sit patiently and await your direction. Offer them physical demonstrations and start to make use of commands after revealing them what you anticipate.

Now one prepares to head out and instruct their pet the right method to act. That insane monster can be changed into a calm animal that will not slobber all over one’s visitors. With the correct details found out an individual can remedy their animal dog’s wild habits with the right behavior.

Caring For Your Pet During An Emergency

With the recent earthquake in Japan, the fires in Australia last summer followed by the horrific floods, of we are made aware of how devastating natural disasters can be for people, but it has the same effect for our beloved pets. In the event of an emergency, whether something as large as a natural disaster or as focused as a house fire are you prepared to take care of not only yourself and your family, but your pets as well? In this article we will look at some basic precautions and preparations that will help insure the safety of your pet in an emergency.

You must have a plan of action ready in the event of an emergency. When determining your best options for such plans consider your surroundings and what sort of emergencies you may be facing. For example, if you live in the midwestern portion of the country planning for a hurricane would be futile, however planning for a tornado would be quite prudent. Also think about what sort of industries are in your vicinity and whether an accident there could require your evacuation. Being aware of your environment will aid you in reacting quickly if you need too.

Should the need to evacuate your home arise, your pets should go with you. Many people believe that if they leave their pet behind natural instincts will take over and they will get along just fine. Remember that your pet has been dependent on you for all of their needs for their entire lives. Even if they are capable of reacting instinctually it is important to keep in mind that if it is not safe for you to be there it certainly isnt safe for your pet to be there. Therefore, an important part of your plan should be where to take your pets in the event of an emergency. As much as the Red Cross does in such situations to help those in need they cannot accept pets at their evacuation shelters. You may want to take the time to locate and make a list of places within a 50 to 100 mile radius of your location that you can take your pet. Places to consider for this list would be, other family members homes, animal boarding services, veterinarians with animal boarding facilities, hotels that allow pets and as a last resort animal shelters. Also with todays efficient communications we are often warned well ahead of time of the possibility of an emergency, if this is the case it would be a good idea to keep all of your pets together so that you can round them up quickly should you need to. When you do leave make sure you have solid control of your pets, even the most docile or well-behaved pets actions can become erratic and unpredictable when they are frightened as may be the case during an emergency.

The wisdom of an emergency kit has been highly touted and rightfully so. Your own kit may contain things such as a change of clothes, prescriptions and medications, travelers checks or even food and water. Your pets emergency kit isnt much different by comparison. It should contain enough food and water to last a week in airtight containers to insure it stays fresh. You should replace this food and water every six months. If you opt to include canned food dont forget to add a hand operated can opener. A bowl for food and water will be needed, a simple plastic bowl will suffice or you may wish to look into some of the innovative space saving travel bowls available. Because you are going into an unsettling set of circumstances and extra collar and leash as well as a portable kennel for each of your pets is advisable. It would also be wise to have a first aid kit specifically for your pet that includes items such as tweezers, gauze bandages, antibiotic crme, antiseptic spray or hydrogen peroxide. You should also include any special medications your pet may require in the first aid kit. Be sure to ask your veterinarian about storage requirements as well as how often this medication should be rotated. It is a good idea to review your pets emergency kit every 6 months or so to make sure that the items included are appropriate to any changes that may have occurred with your pet i.e. growth or weight gain.

Herbal pet products

The bond of love and affection that people have with their pets is simply admirable. However keeping pets is not as easy as it sounds because you have to take a lot of care for keeping them healthy. Their bad health can also impact the health of the owner. The food, herbal pet products or the vitamins that we purchase for our pets are vital for ascertaining that they remain healthy and active because an active pet is a joyful pet for the owner and for the entire family. Some years back, pet owners were using pet food and products that were based on different artificially produced ingredients and flavors. People have now become quite conscious about the health of their pets and have now moved towards Herbal pet products which lack side effects and harmful chemicals. Herbal pet products have a longer life as compared to the artificial products because by the time that the artificially produced products reach different stores, they normally loose the effectiveness of their nutrients and vitamins.

Pets have their own requirements in terms of liquid and food and they cannot survive with food which is not for their body. There are not many good companies that are manufacturing herbal pet products and for this reason, you need to put in a considerable amount of research before you actually buy one. Herbal pet products being manufactured by quality concerns are normally made of high quality organic components and different herbs that animals or pets eat. You should always be willing to ask different question before buying Herbal pet products because pets do not have the same amount of natural tendency to counter diseases like we do. The use of different herbal pet products also comes with the question about the concentration and the method of their use. So when you buy them, always use the right combination or amount for giving your pet the desired concentration. You can also consult an animal doctor for such purpose and they are the best to guide you about the dietary requirements of various pets. In case a pet suffers from sickness or any aliment, herbal pet products which serve as a medicine have also been formulated by different companies. Here again the important thing is that you should seek expert advice before your start the treatment with herbal pet products.

Herbal pet products basically serve more of a diet rather than a cure for diseases because they are more effective in boosting your pet’s immunity system rather than killing a disease once it has penetrated. Apart from the herbal pet products, the owner should also go for his/her pet’s regular checkup and should have a good know how about the food that can be given. Dogs normally suffer from fleas and if an owner does not about the disease and what prevention to take, it can pose a serious threat to the dog’s life. Grown up dogs can be treated with products involving chemicals but the puppies cannot be subjected to such products and the best remedy for them is the herbal pet products. So be diligent in your decision because your pet is after all a living being that feels pain and has emotions.

Dog Boarding Basics Every Pet Owner Must Know

Dog boarding or kenneling offers a convenient and safe way to make sure pets are well-looked after when you need to get away for a while. For a fee, loved pets are placed in the capable hands of dog boarding authorities to be fed, groomed and exercised.

To some, it may seem an unnecessary expense to have pets professionally cared for for a couple of days when relatives can be asked to look after them for that period. However, not everyone likes animals, some who do may have allergies or no time while others may see them as an inconvenience especially with busy work schedules. Besides, it isn’t really fair to expect friends and family to take care of pooches when there are facilities designed for the same. Moreover, at a dog boarding center, you can be assured that staff know how to handle dogs, even those with less amiable personalities.

Dog boarding kennels can be found in most major towns and cities. However, if you live in the outskirts you might have to drive a considerable distance to find one. If your pet isn’t a fan of car travel, the drive can be troublesome. Still, it’s a safer option than leaving it with people who aren’t fond of dogs.

When looking for a kennel, make sure it’s licensed or certified at the very least. Regulations may vary from state to state so find out if licensing and certification are requirements in your area. Ask to see the proof of the two when you conduct an inspection of the boarding facility. If staff refuse to procure documents, look for another kennel.

Facilities should have certain provisions to ensure a safe stay. There must be separate grounds for more aggressive dogs and if cats are also housed, the two must be well apart. Since kennels accommodate several animals at any one time, the play area should be large enough. Proper fencing and clean lawns are important.

The kennels should be large enough for dogs to move around besides space for sitting, eating and sleeping. Though naturally confined, they shouldn’t be cramped. There must be bedding, space for a litter box and dog and water bowls. When inspecting the place, look out for cleanliness and ask the staff what cleaning agents are used to keep kennels sanitary. If your pet has allergies to chemicals certain cleaning agents may cause a reaction.

Adult dogs are typically fed twice a day. However, some may need to be fed more often. You must let staff know your dog’s dietary requirements and habits. The environment is unfamiliar as it is and it’ll feel more comfortable with the routine.

Enquire about tie-ups with veterinary hospitals in case of emergencies. Conduct a check on the vet hospitals too and assess how far away they are from the kennel. There should be a vet on call as well.

Where health is concerned, a good kennel will insist that all animals are up-to-date on vaccines including flea treatments. If your pet is behind its shots, get it vaccinated or you won’t be able to avail kennel services.

At an extra cost, you can have dogs groomed, bathed and even trained. Such services are required if you intend being away for more than a week. If you plan to board more than one dog, you may be able to avail discounts so enquire if that’s possible.

Care for the Pet with Proper Mechanisms in Place

Having a pet is perhaps one of the best ways to improve the quality of live. For the simple reason being that they provide unconditional love and not only that they also work in improving the wellness of a person, both emotionally and physically too. With a furry pet like a dog, it not only decreases stress and high levels of anxiety but also works wonderfully well in helping people get up and about and take a walk or run. Thereby this works doubly well – decrease risk of strokes and improve energy levels.

However it is important to have a proper dog training program from the time the animal is a pup. It starts with a schedule right from mealtimes to the time they defecate. There are established ways in training pets based on the attributes of the animal, her/his personality traits that are met with reinforcement either through approved communication or with a treat. There are many institutes that provide this format of house training pets, which works wonderfully well, but it is also important for the owner to bond with the animal. Dogs they say make the best friends and in fact are a lot more loyal than humans! Many people who are owners of pets actually prefer spending time with them rather than the chit chat with gossips!

There are dog training Singapore schools in the country that ensure that the animals are taught never to defecate anywhere and everywhere. Considering it is one of the best kept countries in the planet, one cannot take the pet out for a walk and let it do its business and look away. There are rules that one must abide by and if found wanting one will have to cough up a certain amount to the authorities. Therefore before taking the dog out for a walk, the animal has to be toilet trained so that it does not poop! Obedience training is an involved sport that many owners in the country like to follow.

This follows the system of scheduling with a prize at the end of the session if the animal does as it has been ordered to do. This also speaks about the enthusiasm levels in dogs and their willingness to learn. In this manner there is a personal relationship of trust and camaraderie that is built up with the trainer, the owner and the pet. Of course along the way, if the pet has the makings of a professional, it can take part in various events and win grand prizes for years on end. However pushing the animal to the brink of despair is not the idea as it can cause depression for the animal and it can get snappish turning on anyone because it is in pain.

Waggie’s pet care was the most acclaimed dog training school in Singapore, which was most comprehensive and professional pet training firm offering a range of dog obedience courses in Singapore.

Healing Glass Fibers Now Available For Pet And Animal Treatments

One topic I and other ACerS staff frequently get asked about relates to a story from last April about the special healing borate-based glass fiber pads developed by glass scientists Delbert Day and Steve Jung in conjunction with MoSci Corp., a Rolla, Mo.-based glass products company. The news last year was that the glass fiber product, dubbed DermaFuse by MoSci, helped speed the healing of venous stasis ulcers in a majority of patients enrolled in a small human clinical test group of adult diabetics supervised by the internal review board of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

Most of the inquiries that come to me are from people who either are suffering with hard-to-heal skin ulcers or sores themselves or are reaching out to me on behalf of friends or family members who have the condition. Their questions are all pretty much along the lines of, “How can I or my doctors get my/their hands on DermaFuse?”

Up until just recently, I had to disappoint a lot of people because MoSci mainly does the R&D for glass products, and then licenses or reaches a supply agreement with third-party commercial companies and institutions, which then shepherd the products through regulatory processes and handle marketing and distribution. And, from what I understand, there are still testing, certification and agreements with distributors that need to be completed before it is authorized for human use.

However, the significant news is that Avalon Medical Ltd. has arranged for the DermaFuse material to be classified as “veterinary medical device” and is now marketing the product under the Rediheal brand to the veterinary and animal care marketplace.

Rediheal borate glass fibers are successfully being used to treat injured green sea turtles and other animals. Credit: Avalon Medical Ltd.
According to the Rediheal website, the company is making the product for various size animals (“Equine version now available”) and is also offering a putty-like version of the product that can be shaped for bone healing.

While the story I originally wrote focused on a case study of human patients with venous stasis ulcers, it appears that Dermifuse/Rediheal material works shockingly well on many types of wounds. For example, the Rediheal website has several amazing animal case studies including large and small lacerations, dental void packing and gunshot wounds. (Warning – photos are not for the squeamish!)

In regard the gunshot wound case, a dog sustained at 42-square-inch wound in its back that was treated with Rediheal. According the company, the wound shrunk rapidly, and 40 days later it was nearly healed.

For me, one of the most jarring things about the gunshot wound is that there appears to be almost no scarring (see for yourself), and the dog”s fur seems to have completely regrown

More information and case studies are on a special Rediheal/Avalon Facebook page, including successful efforts to heal injured green sea turtles at Jekyll Island, Ga.

When Pets Don’t Like Each Other

Have you ever had to live or work with someone you didn’t like?  Think of the things that made the process a bit more bearable for you (time apart, everyone in their own space, less stress in general, focusing on other things, etc..)
Those same things might also help pets who have to live together.

1. Are the fight injurious?  Are there children who might get in the way? Are the fights escalating?  Complete or partial separation might need to be considered while evaluating the relationship

2.  Medical evals for everyone – Humans and non humans
A pet in pain might be “cranky”
If a pet has a medical problem, it can affect how how other pets treat him/her
If a human has any issues, it could cause the pets stress and that stress can  show “crankiness”
Medical evals might includes checks for physical or mental issues
Kidneys, liver, heart, thyroid, joint pain, dementia, anxiety, etc..
3. Can the relationship be rebuilt?  Work with a skilled behaviorist on desensitization and counter conditioning. (DS/CC)  Make the sight of the pet something to look forward to for the other pet.  This can be difficult if there are resource guarding issues or if it’s hard to get a good distance from one another. But a skilled behaviorist might be able to help work something out.

4. Well proofed cues
Having some things in place  like go mat or go to crate can be quite useful when one pet is giving the other the “evil eye”
Try to stop an argument before it starts by calmly asking everyone to go to their places
Make the training fun. Train during boring times then slowly increase distractions. So the behavior will be in place when needed.
5. Jolly talk
The may or may not work in all households. But if you see tension, try laughing or jolly talking,  or initiating a game of play – just something to diffuse the situation.

6. Stress Reduction and Relaxation. As mentioned at the start of this post. We can deal with bothersome people a lot easier if there aren’t other stressful things in our lives.

7. The loudest and/or strongest isn’t always the instigator.  Just because one pet charges or bites or growls or hisses doesn’t mean that was the pet who has the issue.  If you are not sure which pet is causing the issue, work with each pet individually and evenly.
Teach well proofed cues to both pets, send both pets to their crates or mats, etc..

8. If it’s safe to do so, reward everything that is not arguing or fighting or staring or snarling.  i.e. see the pets sitting calmly ignoring each other, then calmly give both a treat. See pets calmly sniffing each other’s butts – praise and/or treat.  But work with a skilled behaviorist. If there is tension or resource guarding, a treat could make things worse.

Building Community One Friend at a Time

Even indoor pets help us get to know other people, according to new research in four cities in the US and Australia.

It’s easy to see how people who regularly walk their dog can get to know others. They might strike up friendly conversations about dogs, or learn to avoid certain people because of the way their off-leash dog charges up with unwanted “friendly” advances. It’s less obvious for people who don’t walk their dogs, or who have pets that are always indoors. But a new study by researchers at the University of Western Australia and Harvard University finds that pets are an important way of getting to know and make friends with other people.

Lead author Lisa Wood told me in an email, “There is growing evidence that social isolation, loneliness and lack of social support are common issues in today’s cities and suburbs, and these can take a negative toll on  our health and wellbeing. Companion animals can however be an antidote to this, as they often create opportunities for us to meet other people. Animals can break the ice between strangers and are a great social leveller, as people of all ages and races can feel that they have something in common.”

“Whilst it might just start with saying hello to someone with a companion animal, our research indicates that this often leads to friendships and can strengthen sense of community.  Pets can introduce us to people we wouldn’t have met otherwise, and this broadens our networks of social support. Such social connectedness and social support is good for our health as individuals and as a community.”

The most common ways of getting to know other people were being neighbours and via local streets/parks. But for pet owners, their pet was the third most common way in San Diego, Nashville and Perth, and the fourth most common in Portland. (It’s important to note this question was asked before any questions about pets, so these responses were not primed by the researchers).

Among the 59% of people who had a pet, about half said they had got to know someone through their pet. And compared to other pet owners, those with dogs were 5x more likely to have met someone this way.

One person said, “Lots of folks in this neighbourhood own and walk dogs. The dogs insist on meeting and greeting, and their humans follow suit. It has caused me to be more social than is my inclination.”

But some of the ways in which pets facilitated getting to know people are surprising. For example, one person said, “Their children are interested in seeing the snake and we never let children come in without parent permission. So before anyone can see the snake or handle the snake we need to have met the parents and had it okayed with them.”

While a cat owner had an interesting situation with socks: “The cat steals people’s socks from their houses, and then I return them. It’s a good way to get to know people. They all think it’s hilarious.”
42% of pet owners had received some kind of social support, such as emotional support or borrowing an item, from someone they met via their pet. Again, this was more likely for dog owners. This is an important finding because social support from other people has important psychological and physical benefits. While previous research shows that animals themselves can provide social support, this study found that animals play a role in facilitating social support from other people.

One of the ways even indoor pets can help to build friendship is through the discovery of common interests. Learning that someone else has an animal too can show they are similar to us, in much the same way people can bond over music or gardening.

2692 people took part in the survey in Perth in Australia and San Diego, Portland, and Nashville in the US. The American cities were chosen for their similarities to Perth in terms of climate, geography, density and housing type. Because summer is a time when people are more often out-and-about with their pets, the survey was conducted in autumn, namely April – June for Perth and September – December in the United States.

Dogs were the most common pet, then cats, fish and birds.

Some of the great things about this study are its large sample size, the design of the questionnaire and the mixed-method approach that included the chance for people to share personal experiences. Since the cities were chosen for their similarity, it will be interesting to see if these results are also found in other locations, both rural and urban.

The results suggest that urban planners, local councils and community organizations should take account of the role of pets in building community.

Boa constrictors as pets

If you quite fancy being a pet owner, then you may have given some consideration as to adopting a boa constrictor as a pet. However, it is imperative that you come to appreciate that caring for a boa takes commitment and they require a considerable amount of time and patience devoted to them in order to them keep happy and safe. In particular, a prospective boa pet owner should consider the following two factors:

The size of a boa constrictor: One of the most common types of boa that is kept as a pet by people is the boa constrictor imperator and you need to be aware that this can grow to 7 – 8 feet in length. If you think that is impressive, then you will be even more awed to discover that the red tailed boa grows beyond the 10 feet margin. Hopefully, it should be fairly evident that you will need a considerable amount of space for your red tailed boa, so that it can move around freely and without discomfort. Large boas also need to eat a lot, and large prey items such as rats or even rabbits will need to be offered.

Lifespan: Even with a conservative estimate being used, a boa constrictor in captivity can survive to around the 20 year mark, which is an extremely long period of time to set aside for the care of a pet. You may find that the long term logistics involved in the care for a boa constrictor is just too hard to manage. After all, whilst most people maybe happy to look after your pet goldfish for a period of time whilst you are on holiday, they may think twice when presented with a 10 foot snake!

Now that we have raised and considered two areas of potential concern, let us now consider whether or not they are actually worth such an investment of time and energy. First and foremost, boas require a certain amount of work to keep them happy and safe, and so this deters a great number of potential owners.

Snakes are derided as being evil within the Bible, and Aesop’s Fables often depict them as sly, nasty creatures. In truth, they are beautiful creatures that can bring a considerable amount of happiness to their owner. Indeed, boas are by their very nature docile creatures which despite their rather intimidating appearance and size are often gentle natured. Most boas can be tolerant to handling and tend to make excellent pets. Treat the boa constrictor with respect, and you will have a remarkable friend for life.

Whilst there can be no denying that snakes require a very precise regime of temperature, humidy and diet, they are actually very low maintenance. Cats and dogs maybe the more popular forms of pets but if truth be told, the reality of the matter is that they can be a major burden on their owner. This is because the owner has to contend with their constant demands for exercise, food, attention and the cat/dog will not stop whining until they get what they want. The snake on the other hand, will require only a few minutes each day and otherwise can be left alone.

Boas are great animals to have because they provide enough of a challenge to be pleasurable, whilst at the same time not posing too much of a difficulty so as to frustrate their owner. The boa constrictor is not a pet that will be well liked or tolerated by everyone and therefore it is imperative that you carefully consider your final decision. Given the extremely long lifespan that they invariably enjoy, it is crucial that you are fully committed and able to actually care for them in the long term because otherwise, you will find yourself struggling very badly to deal with them. So take your time, read up on the subject, and speak with other snake owners before making a decision to become a snake owner yourself!

The oversight could confirm financially devastating and emotionally heartbreaking.

The detriment of veterinary expense is on the bank. Technology, liability cross, medications, and remedial study have enforced veterinary clinics to elevate their rate. The intensify in the payroll is then transferred to pet owners.

It was just estimated that the standard dog landlord will exhaust about two hundred dollars a year at the vet’s work. Cats were a little cheaper; their owners only depleted about a hundred and sixty dollars in veterinary bills. What if the pet is something more exotic like a pot bellied pig, a search, a rabbit, a snake, or even a brute? The more exotic the pet the more, the pet possessor is likely to spend on the veterinarian bills, especially if they have a pet such as a monster which will doubtless oblige a vet with elite skills. What happens to the pet if it swiftly gets sick or is injured in a freak accident? How much will it set the pet vendor back if they have to take their family pet to a university’s veterinary drill, will they be able to give it or will they be forced to euthanize their pet for lucrative reasons?

Many pet owners try to keep the unexpected veterinary bills at bay by providing admirable worry for their pets. Finding A Vet For Your Pet

Pets are nice to have around because they keep their owners happy and provide them with companionship. There are people who prefer common pets like dogs and cats. However, there are also people who opt for strange and exotic pets.

Exotic pets are just like the other animals around but they are just strange to look at and to deal with especially if they are living close to the habitat of man. Exotic pets are called such because they aren’t commonly seen within the human environment.

Adventurous people prefer to take care of exotic pets like big lizards, iguanas, alligators, and big snakes. Strange as it may seem, these pets keep them company and sometimes not inside the pet cages but even in the privacy and luxury of their own homes.

Owning an exotic pet can be quite difficult as they entail a different kind of care compared to common pets. Exotic pets are also more expensive to take care of because of their food and living requirements. Most exotic pets are best left in the wildlife where they can take care of each other but when a person brings home an exotic pet, he must make sure that the pet is well taken care of by a veterinarian.

Veterinarians can be relied on to take care of common pets but how does one choose a veterinarian for his exotic pet? There are many veterinarians but only a few who are considered experts in taking care of exotic pets. Maybe because taking care of common pets like dogs and cats is much more productive as most people have them for pets rather than exotic pets.

Exotic pets are sometimes given to children as gifts. However, children should be educated on how to take care of their pets. As always, there should be a veterinarian the child can call when seeking advice for his exotic pet.

Among the exotic pets that are commonly given to children as gifts are guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, mice, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and leopard geckos. Most of these exotic pets are quite easy to handle and require uncomplicated care. They are also generally safe to handle although children should also be advised to exercise caution in handling these exotic pets and to seek the assistance of a veterinarian when necessary.

It is important to develop a good relationship with the family veterinarian especially those with exotic pets. It is hard to find veterinarians with expertise on exotic pets so once you find the right one, it is wise to keep him. There may be several veterinarians in the area but those specializing in exotic pets can rarely be found. To be sure that you have adequate protection for an exotic pet, it is best to seek a veterinarian specializing in exotic pet care first before buying the exotic pet.

Find a Lost Pet

How to find a lost pet?

Many pet owners think of their pet as a special member of their family. Due to the closeness that exists between pets and their owners, it is especially upsetting when the animal becomes lost. However, because these critters love to explore and have adventure, don’t immediately despair the loss of your family pet. With the right information and action, you can be united with your lost pet and bring it home to safety. So we help to answer to question, how do I find a lost pet?

Where to look?

Because the majority of pets love to explore and even escape to dark, quiet places, it is important to quickly investigate your home or yard before you venture out looking for it. Maybe your pet is hiding in a cozy spot or even hidden outside under a bush. Pets sometimes like to just escape the noise and confusion of kids or even visitors. So before you leave the home, really do a thorough search of inside and outside. Once you feel you have investigated the living quarters, and you can’t find your pet, determine if you can see how the pet escaped or got out. This is important to trace back your pet’s steps, if possible. Maybe it was distracted by the pet next door, or perhaps it has a tendency to dig or jump over fences. If you can figure out some of those details, it might give you clues to where it may have gone. For example, if it is distracted by another animal, it may have followed it to another house, and you can check there before you venture out. It is also imperative to determine how long the pet has been missing. If you have been gone all day at work, it may have had plenty of time to travel, but maybe you can figure out it has only been lost for a short amount of time. If so, it is likely to be close to your home. Also, consider animal size as you ponder where it might be. Little dogs often can’t travel as quickly as bigger dogs, and so this information might be useful. A quick assessment of the situation often can help you make the best choices for your search for the lost dog. Once you quickly factor in this information, find a friend or two to help you as you organize a swift search. It is best if one person stays by the phone so that if your pet is found, that person can relay that information to the search party. This can often be a quick way to resolve your issue and bring your beloved pet home rapidly.

Be Organized

It is also crucial to be organized before you set out on your search. As you leave, grab a flashlight, current picture of your pet, a whistle, favorite treat of your pet, and a leash to harness the animal if you find it. All of these things can be vital to your first search. Because pets can become scared or even may be injured, it’s good to have a light to search inside dark places, even if it is not dark outside yet. Your picture can help you get accurate information about whether or not your neighbors have seen the pet. Sometimes if you just describe a pet, it can be confusing when you use proper names to identify breeds. Not everyone will know those names, so pictures make it faster and easier to go from house to house. Whistles and treats can be good ways to attract an animal back to you. Since pets can hear so much better, they can respond to noises you can’t hear. Your pets favorite treat may also help in bringing it back. Finally, grabbing a leash before you set out means that if you find your pet, it can be led back home where it belongs. Some pets might be scared when they are out on their own, and this ensures that they don’t run away again. This quick search of the neighborhood or surrounding area usually results in bringing your favorite pet home, but don’t give up if you don’t immediately find the animal. Pets can return home days, weeks, months, and even years later. Therefore, decide how you can best let everyone know of your loss, so more eyes and ears can help you in your hunt.

Flyers and Posters

Flyers and missing dog cards are great ways to quickly relay to a large group of people what you want them to know. Make your Lost Pet posters big enough for motorists to be able to identify the most important information, and it is crucial you post them at a level that everyone can see. First, you want the words, “LOST DOG” to catch every eye. Then you want a picture of the pet, large enough to really notice. Many posters are ignored because they have irrelevant or missing information. Post your phone number in big letters, and if you want to offer a reward, just include “REWARD.” You don’t need to specify the amount on the poster. This might take up too much space, and it also might bring out dishonest scammers. In addition to flyers that you post in the neighborhood, at vets, animal shelters, and in town, you can also make smaller cards to give to people that have relevant information about your missing pet.

Places of Interest

After doing this, set up a plan to call and visit a myriad of vets, animal shelters, humane societies, and even the local department of transportation. Making initial calls does save time, but as the workers change often, and they deal with a lot of animals, it is essential to make regular visits to each of these places. Maybe set up a chart to document when you visited each place, so that you have a regular schedule and don’t miss any of them. Of course, animal shelters and humane societies will take in animals regularly, but many people opt to take lost pets to the local vet for safety and care. Finally, while it is not a happy thought, you need to call the department of transportation, as they often pick up animals off the side of the road. However, if those animals are injured, they are taken to a shelter, so don’t assume the worst about your lost pet.

Stay Positive

As you search, remember that there are many reasons to stay positive. Animals are resilient, and many who find them will quickly take them in to care for them, searching for the owners as they do this. Keep up the search, and just because it is extended, don’t give up.

Today there are more resources than ever to find lost pets. Many post ads in newspapers, and you can even check the “Lost and Found” daily. Radio programs also offer times and specific shows that allow you to share this with listeners. However, one of the fastest ways to spread the need for help is the internet. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Craigslist disburse information to a wider range of people, in a matter of seconds. Don’t underestimate how this can help you find your beloved lost pet. In addition, there are a wide variety of online services that will assist in helping you find your dog.

These all work to bring home pets through the internet, phone, and flyers. Losing your pet is a sad and trying time, but there are many pets that are returned home to happy owners each day. Stopping to think before you frantically run out searching, often brings better results. A plan of action will provide peace of mind and hopefully a happy reunion with you and your pet. Don’t give up hope on finding your lost dog.

Help With Pet Hair In Your Home

Owning a pet can be a wonderful experience in many ways, but one of the downsides can be having a home filled with pet dander or hair. Many people are allergic to fur, or have allergies that the pet dander can aggravate. Your pet cant help it, they shed, and its your job as their owner to remove the pet hair from your home. Here is a handy guide to what you will need to combat pet dander in your home. These methods are quick and inexpensive and can be implemented by any pet owner!

Step One

Learn how to use a vacuum! You need to vacuum your house weekly. If you do not, dander or hair may sink into carpets or furniture and become impacted. Then it becomes much more difficult to remove the dander completely. You need to focus mostly on your carpets. You can use a lint roller in highly trafficked places to remove hair even more completely. Then, you can use ordinary dryer sheets on your furniture. By rubbing your furniture with the dryer sheets you cannot only repel hair from sticking to the furniture, but can also leave your furniture smelling fresh. No pet odor here!

Step Two

Filters are your friend! They can help trap dust, dirt and pet hair that wander around the air in your apartment. If you change your air filter once a month or so, you will only be out about 2 bucks a month, but the air in your apartment will be free of dander. Your equipment will be functioning at a high level when clean, and the airborne particles will not be circulating their way around your home. You can also vacuum vents around your house to remove hair that could be stuck to the outside of the vents.

Step Three

Wash those linens! By washing all of your sheets, pillows, and blankets regularly you can not only remove the dander that may accumulate (especially if your pet sleeps in your bed,) but you can keep a parasite problem at bay. Fleas and bedbugs will not survive weekly washing; that is for sure! Make sure to use a strong detergent and drier sheets to even more fully remove the pet hair from your linens. Make sure to empty your dryer lint traps. More pet hair in your laundry will mean that the washer and drier will be working overtime. Keep up the maintenance for the washer and drier, and they will be an important tool in helping keep pet hair at bay in your home.

Step Four

Brush those pets! You should groom your pets as often as possible. You will remove any loose hair hanging around on your puppy or kitten, which will lead to less hair being left around your house. Use a good brush and groom them 2-3 times a week for best results. You can also wipe your pet down with some pet wipes to remove any other hair that may be clinging to them.

Help Your Pet with Dog & Cat Stairs

Pet stairs or dog stairs, as they are often referred to, are a great way to help your pet get on and off furniture. They can be used for both large and small dogs, as well as young and old dogs. Pet stairs can be used for a variety of reasons.

There are many benefits to purchasing dog stairs. The most obvious reason is that it helps to reduce the amount of jumping your dog does. This is great for older dogs that may suffer from arthritis and have some difficulty getting on and off of things. Or perhaps your dog is recovering from an injury and you do not want him jumping up on the bed. Many larger dogs suffer from hip dysplasia. Dog stairs will help to ease their pain and suffering by reducing the risk of further injuring themselves. Dog stairs can help to promote healing by lowering the risk of re-injury.

Even the healthiest dogs are subject to spinal or joint injuries from jumping up and down. Many breeds with short legs, long spines, sensitive joints or bones or those who are overweight are at a higher risk for injuries. The dog steps help to cushion the impact associated with jumping up and down from beds, furniture, etc.

The dog steps are great for pet owners. They eliminate the need for you to constantly lift your dog on and off of things. If you have some type of physical limitation yourself, you will really appreciate dog stairs. Dog stairs are easy to move around. They are lightweight and most are easy to store and assemble.

They come in various sizes to accommodate the special needs of your dog. Many dog steps are equipped with non-skid pads that help the stairs to not slide or scratch floors.

With the versatility of dog stairs, they are a must have for anyone who owns a dog. No matter what type of dog you have, you will benefit from purchasing a set of dog stairs. Even healthy, young dogs can use pet stairs. So whether you have a large, older dog or a small healthy dog, pet steps are a great investment.

The Dream Weaver thing can work for positive or negative. People sure do fear Spiders. I personally was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider and for the first time in my life, I had a fear around Spider. It wasnt a Ew, Im so scared of spiders fear. It was a realization that my leg was melting and that I needed help fixing it. My cousin, the Doctor, healed me in two weeks time. Now it is a, I think I will wear long pants and gloves when doing this chore thing. I learned a whole new level of respect for my friend, the Brown Recluse. When I was looking at the hole in my leg, I studied the Spiders traits and what they meant for me.

I saw a new trait that I had never noticed before. A Spiders body is in two sections. On its side, it becomes an infinity symbol. I also realized, even though I knew this, that not all Spiders spin webs. That reminds me that we all have our gifts and our jobs that only we can do. Spiders are also very fragile. All About Leather

During the ancient times, countless things have been made out of leather. It has been passed on from generation to generation and onto the leather that leaves a mark or a fashion statement in this era. Examples of these items are shoes and belts. In addition to this, leather jackets, protective aprons, hats and even pants have been created from leather. Thus, amongst these items, leather boots have come a long way in proving its durability.

Leather is known to be produced from animal skins. Any animal can be used to produce leather. However, to date, the thickest and strongest known skin best made into leather is cow skin. Once the butcher has already slaughtered the animal, the next thing he would do is to skin the animal. After this, the butcher would give the skin to a tanner, a person who makes leather. The tanner is the one in charge in making this piece of skin into leather, for leather bags, shoes, belts and boots.

In the olden times, people used different techniques in producing leather. After scraping of the flesh from the animal by using a bone, stone scraper or a metal knife, they would put a kind of chemical or salt on the skin in order to process it. Some even used urine back then. The tanners also collected urine from toilets in public areas as well as from certain homes. After collecting the urine, they would let it stand for about a week until the urine turns into ammonia, which they would put onto the skin so as to cure it. These processes are the ones used by tanners before just to create leather.

Aside from this, during the ancient times as well, countless things have been made out of leather. These were passed on from generations and up to now; they are still being produced and worn by leather lovers. Examples of these items are shoes and belts. In addition to this, leather jackets, protective aprons, hats and even pants have been created from leather. Hence, starting from the good old west where leather boots had a masculine statement for men; it still has that effect on those who love riding motorcycles, motorbikes and Harleys these days. Women have also taken a fancy on these leather boots. This is from sexy lingerie to nightlife outfits. Boots have become a fashion statement that brings out an aura of sexiness to whoever wears one.

Forms of leather

In these modern times, various processes are utilized in order to turn animal skin into another useful material called leather.

Vegetable-tanned leather is processed by tanning it with the use of tannin as well as several ingredients derived from tree barks, vegetable matter, as well as other sources. It has a supple texture and its color is usually brown.
Chrome-tanned leather is tanned by means of chromium sulfate and several chromium salts. This leather has a more supple texture. It is also more pliable as compared to vegetable-tanned leather. Having this advantage, it does not easily discolor nor lose its shape when exposed to water unlike in the case of having it vegetable-tanned. It has a wet-blue color due to the effects of chromium.
Aldehyde-tanned leather is subjected under the treatment of glutaraldehyde or other oxazolidine compounds. It is considered as wet-white leather because it has a white or pale cream coloration. This kind of leather is mainly used for chrome-free leather such as infant’s shoes as well as automobiles.
Synthetic-tanned leather is known to be tanned with aromatic polymers. It is color white. This type of leather was invented due to the shortage of vegetable tannins back in the Second World War.
Alum-tanned leather is cured with aluminum salts which are mixed with various binders as well as protein sources like egg yolk flour, etc. This kind of leather has a very light shade of leather and is not as supple as Vegetable-tanned leather.
Rawhide is produced through the scraping of the animal skin until it becomes thin after which it will be soaked in lime. After soaking the skin, it will then be stretched while it is dried. This kind of leather is not considered as a genuine kind of leather. It is just usually mixed with other forms of leather. It is much stiffer as well as more brittle as compared to other leather forms. In addition, it is mainly used for items that are not flexed significantly like drum heads. Moreover, it can be cut up in order to form cords that are used for stitching, lacing, as well as for dog chews.

To improve the leathers water resistance, it is usually oiled with natural oils. This can improve the leathers lifespan. Furthermore, leather that has hair not removed from it is known as hair-on leather.

Leather Types

In general, leather is sold in three forms:

Full-Grain leather or Top-Grain is known to be hides that havent been buffed, snuffed or sanded. The only thing removed is the hair from the skin. The grain is still in its original state, thus, retaining its fiber strength and durability. In addition, natural grain has good breathability which results to a more comfortable type of clothing.
Corrected-Grain leather is known to be a kind of Top-Grain leather with its surfaces buffed, snuffed or sanded so as to be able to take out imperfections on its surface brought about by bites, scars or also brands.
Split leather is produced from fibrous parts of hide that has been left once the raw hides top-grain is segmented from the split hide. This type of leather can also be utilized in order to make suede.

Other known leathers that are less-common include:

Buckskin or brained
Patent leather

An Introduction To Pet Photography

Photographing your pet could be an incredibly rewarding experience. Accomplished well, it will permit you to immortalize Fluffy or Spot – that considerable member of your family – the pet that shared you food, chewed your shoes, and brought you the newspaper. The fact is, the act of seriously photographing your pet will bring you both closer mainly because the procedure opens you to noticing the modest, excellent things that you may have missed before – the way he wags his tail, etc. This is really a grand adventure.

As with anything, its finest to proceed having an objective in mind so you know where to start. What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to capture your pets playful side? Are you attempting to setup a funny photo making use of a prop such as a birthday hat? Is this an interactive portrait between your pet and your child? Sit down and put on paper this goal, mainly because it will assist you to in preparing correctly. Nothing is worse than spending an hour going to your favorite scene with equipment in hand and realizing your forgot a favorite toy – do your self a favor, don’t skip this step.

Now that you might have decided on your objective, its now time to choose the proper setting. Indoors vs. outdoors. Near the fireplace with an open fire inside the background, or in a studio. At the beach or within the woods. As you feel about the correct setting, believe about how your pet will respond to that setting. In case you choose the public park will be the perfect location, you need to believe about your pets resistance to distractions. Is he/she able to resist running right after another animal or individual? The extra you know your pet and look via his/her eyes, the superior off you might be.

Now you are at the critical preparation stage. Youve set your objective, youve decided on the appropriate setting – lets attempt to anticipate all that will (and will) go wrong. I use the word wrong loosely – try not be too rigid and to have fun – we will talk a lot more about that in a minute. Write out on paper every achievable factor you may feel of. Here are some suggestions:

Exercise your pet – just sufficient so they are still alert, but not hyper
Lighting – outdoor is most effective, but flash will work too – ought to be natural lighting
Grooming – only if it doesnt adversely affect your pets mood – then do it days beforehand
Props/Toys – favorite of the pet
Food – favorite of the pet
Be ready for sudden movement – shutter speed about 1/125th and use iso 400 or 800 film (if indoors)
Watch the scene clutter
Have pet at least 6 feet away from background to lessen shadows
Bring an assistant to assist manage your pet
Zoom Lens
Camera, Film, Tripod, Equipment, etc.
Etc., etc. Are you obtaining the thought? The very first time you make out your list, the process is going to be a little tedious, but the beauty is that as soon as the list is made, all you must do is modify it slightly for the next sessions.

On Location

Whew, youve made to shooting location – congratulations. Hopefully, youve brought every thing you’re going to want, right? Right! Now, its time for setup. Be organized; get everything laid out in a logical fashion. The last thing you would like to be performing is fiddling around with equipment once you need to be shooting pictures – an animal has a zero attention span and you’ve got to be ready to snap that picture when the moment is there. How is you animals demeanor? Is he/she super wound up? If yes, then perhaps some light exercise could be in order – absolutely nothing too heavy, but just enough to aid him/her calm down. How are you? Are you stressed? Relax, and go with the flow – animals are super sensitive to your mood. Give your pet some last minute grooming – just touch-ups. For anyone who is outdoors, how will be the wind? Is it too strong? Is the sun too bright? Keep in mind, overcast is much greater for exposure. Ensure that that your pet is far sufficient away from your background so as to not cast any shadows.

The Photographers Mindset

Your mindset really should be one of peace and serenity. I cant overstate that enough. Also, you have to climb into the mind of your pet as best you are able to. What are they thinking and feeling? Align your expectations correctly. When you have never carried out this just before, dont anticipate perfection the first time out – which will just raise your anxiety level and will anxiety out your pet.

One of probably the most essential points to remember would be to get down on your pets level, physically, as much as feasible. A shot from above doesnt portray intimacy. In addition, once you are at your pets level, its easier for you to empathize with it. If youve in no way crawled around on the ground prior to, you may feel a bit foolish, but trust me, it makes all of the distinction inside the world. Make sure that you and your handler work with each other – you’ve got got to be in charge, but also attempt to be flexible – you might have a great deal of variables that you are managing.

Be patient, and have a whole lot of fun!!!

Difference between land and water pet turtle care

Turtles are one of the most popular, exotic and fascinating creatures available in a pet store, if you have to describe in a few words. If you are thinking of adopting a pet turtle, your main prerogative must be to be well informed and aware of the techniques for creating a suitable habitat for your turtle, including a dry area and a wet area. Did you know that turtles can live up to 40-50 years old? You pet’s going to be your companion for most of your life. Don’t they deserve the best possible care you can give them? To ensure that your pet turtle is delivered high maintenance and proper care, you need to be well endowed with the basic information regarding your pet turtle’s care, treatment, diet and factual data.

Pet turtles flourish the best when they are kept outside in the open. Turtles are animals that indulge in hibernation during the winter months and if they are confined inside during those months, they will not but obviously not hibernate as they will not know what time of the year it is. In case they fail to hibernate, it may invite unwelcome health ailments of the liver. Further, pet turtles must be permitted to stay out in the natural environment to enjoy heat of the sun, graze on grass and marvel in the fresh surroundings.

If you decide otherwise and keep your pets largely indoors, then make sure you provide at least a forty gallon tank size in which your turtle can swim around freely. This is essential because there needs to be enough elbow space for a water only area as well as a dry land area and sufficient room between the two for the turtle to survive comfortably. A minimum of 1/3rd of the tank must be devoted to land and a part of this dry land must have direct access to rays provided by a UV light. The best way to offer this is to have large, flat rocks under the lamp that gives the turtle ample area to bask themselves. A temperature of about 80 degrees during the day and 70degress during the night must be regulated and maintained.

Unfortunately but true, turtles are not pets that are meant to be played with just like fish. They are best to be observed and watched from a distance through the walls of the tank. Turtles are cold blooded pets and hence it takes them a while to adapt to change in temperature. Taking a turtle out from its comfortable warm tank gives them quite a shock and could also hurt their immune system. Proper turtle care and maintenance commands for it to be as unchanging and predictable as possible. Most turtles, both land and water based, require a similar diet consisting of fresh, leafy greens and vegetables. Some kinds of land based turtles such as the box turtles or tortoise do not demand very extensive habitats and a very basic but safe enclosed outdoor housing is sufficient. Other turtle and terrapins, by contrast require both a dry as well as a wet environment.

Caring for and tending to turtles can be extremely rewarding and satisfying provided it is executed with a sense of commitment and integrity. If you are looking for a quiet and serene but still an exotic and affectionate animal to raise as a pet, you must undisputedly consider a turtle. Most pet owners are ultimately satisfied with their decision and despite the fact that turtles are not huggable and cuddly pets, they exude warmth and love like any other four legged pet.

Finding Animal Events To Attend

Go to any town or city around the world and you will find animal lovers, people who own pets or are involved in animal rescue, rehabilitation or social enjoyment opportunities with other pet owners. From columns in magazines to regular features in newspapers, it seems that people who value and enjoy animals are everywhere. These animal lovers often seek out other people with similar values to share their interest and concern. They simply enjoy being with other like-minded people to talk about animal antics, and the contribution animals make to their lives and families.

I have found that many animal lovers are frustrated to learn of animal related events and news after they have occurred because they were simply not in the right place at the right time to hear about it. It seems that unless people are on the right email list, Twitter feed or Facebook page or standing in front of a physical noticeboard at the right time, there is no consistent or cohesive way of learning about animal related events and news stories. For vets or small organisations, they may not have any presence on Facebook or a website, instead promoting their events on their own or community noticeboards. Word of mouth is traditionally a way of letting people know about events but this limits potential attendees to those within the vicinity of the event. Now animal organisations and vets can feel more confident that when they create events, their time will not be wasted since promotion will be wider with the increased likelihood of people attending.

Smart phone technology has come to the rescue to solve this problem giving animal lovers quick and easy access to information about animal related news and events, not only in one’s local area but also nationally or globally. Suddenly the market of potential attendees, contributors and people responding to live and online campaigns, is enhanced.

Everyone, it seems, checks their phone as much as an animal lover checks the welfare of their pets. Thus, smartphone technology offers a real opportunity to bring together animal lovers, advocates and organisations in one place – the smartphone. What better way to connect with like-minded others about everything that is animal. With new communication methods, there is real hope that the message of animal welfare will extend beyond those animal lovers who see the beauty of their pets, to all animals we share this planet with.

Getting A License For Your Exotic Pet

Some people like animals. And some are especially fond of the real exotic ones. Exotic animals are those not usually made as a pet. It is definitely not a dog, a bird, or a cat. Exotic animals are usually found in jungles, forests, and the wild. Examples of these are skunks, snakes, or even tigers and lion cubs.

Some local governments require people, who intend to take care of these exotic pets within their yards or homes, to secure an exotic pet license. For one, in Illinois, it is illegal to own and take care of an exotic animal. In Georgia, you can take certain species of a skunk as pet without a permit.

But as a precaution, here are the steps you should do the moment you intend to take an exotic pet home.

1. Look for a listing of pets considered as exotic within your area. You can try the internet, there you will be able to find information about pets and owning one where you live. But as a rule of thumb, if your pet normally lives in the open, it is most probably wild.

2. Check your local laws and see if there is a rule against owning exotic pets. As stated earlier, there are states that don’t allow it outright. For some states, it is okay. And others will require that you hold an exotic pet license. Call your local information service. They should be able to connect you to the right department to get the necessary information.

3. Process the necessary papers. If in case the state that you live in does require an exotic pet license, you have no choice but to comply. Compile all the necessary documents that they need and pass it on to the proper office accordingly.

4. See if there is any vaccines or removal of body parts like teeth is required. Because some exotic pets can be harmful, local state laws require owners to do something like these in order to protect the other people within the community.

5. File for the permit as necessary. After making sure that you have all the papers and the requirements met and ready, you are now ready to make a trip to your local government office to file and secure the permit with them.

These are the things you have to do to acquire the much needed permit for that sweet old exotic pet you always wanted. Hopefully, you need not transfer to another state just to take care of it!

Buying Pet Medication Online

As everyone is aware there is a world wide recession, and most of us are all feeling the crunch. We are all affected by this and in turn it also affects animals, especially pets. This can be witnessed by the number of animals that have been abandoned to pet sanctuaries or, even worse, left by the side of the road to fend for themselves. Conversely less people are prepared to rescue and re-house these animals as the cost is prohibitive.

No true pet owner and animal lover would ever want to abandon their pet but it is a difficult choice to make when it comes to looking after oneself, ones family or ones pet. Of course it is recognized that to some people their pets are their family so what follows in this article should be of even more interest to them.

We will all agree that people shouldnt have pets unless they are prepared to love and care for them. In terms of care, one of the costliest areas is that of looking after your pets health. Whether it is a short term problem or ongoing they still deserve the best health care we can give them. If your pet is suffering from a long term problem, veterinary practitioners prescription charges can be particularly expensive. This brings me to the main theme of this article; buying pet medication online.

There are several advantages to purchasing your pet medication online. There is the convenience and time saving factor, pets are less likely to miss a regular dose if the vet has forgotten to order in since the medication is delivered directly to the pet owner’s home, but most of all there is the savings in cost. Many discount pet medication websites are able to sell pet prescriptions and non-prescription items for a significantly lower price since the website is able to purchase the medications in bulk at a lower cost from the prescription drug manufacturer, whereas a veterinary clinic only purchases limited amounts of any particular pet medication.

The buying of non-prescription medicines on line should be relatively straightforward. These are the sorts of things you would normally purchase anyway but this time you should get them at discount prices and they are delivered straight to your door, for example flee or tick powders such as Advantage and Frontline, vitamin supplements or oral hygiene products and heartworm medication like Heartguard, Arthogen for healthy bones and joints, Atopica for the control of atopic dermatitis and many more pet medications and grooming aids.

Regarding prescription medication a word of warning needs to be introduced: Never try to self prescribe and always seek the advice of a professional veterinarian! Just because a friend has the same breed of cat dog or any other pet as you doesnt mean they can advise you. Like humans, all pets are different with different health histories, weight and age differences, etc. So you must be guided by your vet. Some animals may need short term prescription medication for such things as diarrhea or antibiotics for curing minor infections or cuts and grazes, whereas others may need long term medication for the treatment of such things as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes or even allergies. As long as you can obtain the correct and certified medication, have been authorized by your vet administer it and your pet is subjected to regular checkups, there should be no problem.

Whether you are a pet owner of long standing or just considering buying a pet, purchasing your pet medication online should be well worth your while. Not only for the savings you might make, but for the peace of mind of knowing you have some control over your pets health. It is an ideal opportunity for parents who are new to animal ownership to get children involved in looking after and having hands on experience in the health and welfare of their new pet.

Buying pet medications online is no different that buying them at your vet’s office except there is a lot less hassle. All the pet medication online products are the same manufacturers that you have trusted with the well-being of your pet for many years.

Disciplining Your Pet Chinchilla

Be conscious of how you intend to discipline your pet. They would not respond if you try to discipline them by shouting, hitting or by making them feel that you are angry. When you discipline your pet using physical ways for example, not only will they not respond and learn, they would also have physical wounds that might be too hard and painful for them to bear. Chinchillas get scared easily and find it hard to trust humans so doing this would not do you any good at all.

When they feel scared of their owner, chances are, they would most likely not respond to your commands and would certainly feel stressed out. When they are stressed out and feel your anger, thye will become hostile and will treat your indifferently. Avoid blowing on your pet’s face as a form of punishment because they can easily contact germs that can also weaken their health and might cause them to have colds and cough.

Chinchillas that are hostile spray urine. This is their way of acting out on their desire to withdraw. They will feel defensive without really knowing why. They wouldn’t stop spraying urine until they find out exactly what is keeping them feeling defensive.

When your pet feels that you are not necessarily try to put them down, they will feel so much better. You need to show your pet just how much you love them and how patient you actually are in treating them. Chinchillas, like humans also want to be treated with respect.

When you show your love, care and patience to your pet, they will also respond to you positively. You can train them by being strict but not necessarily stern and scary. Avoid shouting at your pet.

If your pet is withdrawn because it was previously abused and the like, it might be necessary for you to have them rehabilitated. Rehabilitation can certainly help your pet in a lot of ways. You also have to have a certain level of maturity when treating your pet and bear in mind that they are exotic pets that need special care and attention.

See to it that you interact with your pet in a calm and relaxed manner. Be patient at all times even if it can be hard at some instances. Your pet will certainly know if you can take care of it really well and when you do, they would make you feel that they actually appreciate it.

Never get tired of caring for your pet because even if at times it feels that they don’t understand and don’t appreciate what you are doing for them, they certainly would and you will know it.

the perfect place for your pet’s needs

If you own a pet, then you’ve certainly visited some pet shops before, either to get t??fe? s????? or other accessories for your pet. The problem with pet shops is that they’re not always in our vicinity; in that sense, it’s much easier to look for an online pet shop which can offer every product that you need and also great prices for your purchases. Pet shops are the wonderlands of your pets. Usually, the main product associated with pet shops is food.

Each type of animal needs different foods and you can find all sorts of products in a pet shop. However, sometimes your local pet shop doesn’t have the food you’re looking for, or the accessory you’re looking for. In that case, it’s easier to purchase the desired products online. You can go online at any time and place your order, and it’s very easy to do this right in the comfort of your home, in less than 5 minutes. Online stores are also great because they have a much larger variety of products, from t??fe? s????? to toys and cages for your pets. It’s really fun to browse through each category of products in a pet shop. You can even find new ways of entertaining your pet – and thus, yourself – , buying some new, fun toys, or you can find the premium food you’ve been looking for to feed your pet. Most pet owners are dog or cat owners, with the dog owners having a majority. If you fill into the dog owner category, than you certainly know that you have to buy you dog specific types of food, fitted for its breed and for the age category your pet is. Of course, dogs would eat pretty much any food you give them, but inappropriate foods can trigger diseases. As such, you need to buy t??fe? s????? which is good for their diet and has all of the nutrients that the dog needs. You can find various types of t??fe? s????? in any pet shop, but it’s easier to simply buy it online. Also, not any t??fe? s????? is suited for your pet. Age category is very important in selection, because puppies have different nutrition requirements than adult dogs. Also, you have to combine dry food with homemade food to balance your pet’s diet. Fresh meat and some vegetables are also essential in their diet, so you should introduce these into their daily nutrition. It’s important for you to know that not just any type of food you can find in stores is appropriate. Some are, in fact, the equivalent of junk food for dogs. The Only Real Solution To Pet Homelessness

There are many ways to combat the problem of homeless pets; we can adopt, donate, foster, provide free or low cost spay/neuter, hold innovative adoption campaigns, and microchip our pets.  But all these things will not put an END to pet homelessness, overcrowded shelters, and euthanasia.

I believe the only thing that will truly end the misery of homeless pets is a change in paradigm brought about by Education.  We have to educate the public on the accountability that comes with pet ownership, how to be a responsible pet owner, and how animals should be perceived and treated.  Shelters and rescues are great, I shudder to think of where we’d be without them, but they treat the symptoms, they are not the solution.  The problem is that far too many pets end up in shelters or rescues in the first place.  There are a million reasons for this; some completely valid, most are utterly callous.  The analogy I like to use when I talk about shelters and rescues being a band aid is this story:

A man was walking along a river one day when suddenly he spotted a baby floating down the river!  He jumped in to save the child from drowning.

Just as he pulled the child to safety he spotted another baby floating down the river!  He jumped in to save that one too, but no sooner had he gotten the child to safety he saw two more babies floating down the river.  Suddenly, the river was full of babies who needed to be rescued!

A second man saw what was happening and jumped into the river to help.  They were both working tirelessly to save the babies when the second man suddenly got up and left.  Where are you going?!? shouted the first man, you have to help me save these babies!!!

I’m going up the river to find out WHO is dumping all these babies into the river! he replied.

I like this analogy because it depicts what it’s like for animal shelters and rescues.  The homeless pets just keep coming, it never ends.  We need to stop the proverbial bleeding and find out WHO is dumping all these pets and WHY.  Most importantly, we need to figure out HOW to stop it!

Adoptions, donations, fostering, spay/neuter, microchipping are all critical life saving efforts, but they won’t solve the root cause of the problem of too many animals ending up in shelters or rescue.  People think that more and more adoptions and spay/neuter will solve the problem but it won’t.  We have to stop the continual flow of pets into shelters and rescue!

Trying to convince more people to adopt more pets won’t solve the issue, because the flow of pets into shelters never stops. The flow of pets into shelters will only stop when pet owners make it stop.

Many people think more adoption is the solution, they don’t understand why every homeless pet doesn’t find a home and they blame the shelters for this.  They’ll say things like “There are 12 million people who want to acquire a dog and there are 9 million dogs available for adoption” so there’s no reason why every single adoptable dog shouldn’t find a home!  “The numbers don’t lie” they’ll say.  I know it sounds like a no brainer but it’s not.  The numbers, at a macro level, may seem to tell the full story but they don’t.  Without drilldown on the numbers, like any financial analysis, it is flawed.  Substitute the word “dog” with car, home, spouse, or any other life decision that is highly emotional, and you can begin to see why.  Just for fun, let’s try this exercise:

“There are 9 million people women who want to acquire a dog spouse and there are 12 million dogs men available for adoption marriage”

Well it’s a no-brainer, with 12 million single guys out there right?  So why aren’t all 9 million women busy picking out a china pattern??  Oh I’m sorry, did I neglect to mention that:

* Of the 9 million women searching for a spouse, 1.2 million are gay and want a female spouse.

* Of the 12 million single men who want a spouse, 2 million of them are also gay and want a male spouse.

* Of the 12 million single men who want to marry, 150,000 of them are widowed men over the age of 80 and all 9 million women are under the age of 65.  Ok, some of the 80 year old men are kinda hot and have a lot of money, so that closes the gap a little, LOL!

* Of the 12 million single men who want to marry, 500,000 of them have done jail time for significant crimes.  Only 10,000 of the 9 million woman say they would marry an ex-con.

* Of the 9 million women searching for a spouse, 7 million of them insist on marrying someone with a college education.  Only 9 million of the 12 million single men have a college degree.

This list could go on for days but do you see where I’m going with this analysis?  This example is outrageous and exaggerated but a lot of  ticking off of criteria goes through peoples’ heads when they “want to acquire a pet”.  People usually have very definite ideas about what kind of pet fits their desire and lifestyle.  It isn’t fair to blame them for that, it is everyone’s right to have the pet of their dreams.   If you desperately want a Siberian Husky puppy, you have every right to have one.  No one should coerce or guilt you into adopting a 3 year old Terrier mix if you really only want a Husky puppy.

We all want to do our part and be responsible, but that shouldn’t mean always putting our own desires aside in favor of cleaning up the messes of irresponsible owners who continually dump, thoughtlessly surrender, are careless with, or neglect the pets they made a commitment to.  If you desire a French Bulldog puppy, you have every right to have one.  If you desire a 4 year old Basset Hound, why shouldn’t you have one?  As long as you responsibly acquire the pet of your dreams, you have every right to do so!  Just as you have every right to choose the spouse or the home you desire.

We still live in a world where pets are thought of as “less than” by a large segment of society.  Sadly, spending money, time and energy to properly care for our pets is not everyone’s priority.  Too many people still think of pets as something to be owned, used, and discarded at will, rather than cherished.  This attitude contributes to overcrowded shelters and high euthanasia rates.

I believe the only real solution is to drastically reduce the number of pets that end up in shelters and rescues in the first place by changing the paradigm.  I believe this will only be accomplished through education!  As bloggers, we are privileged to have the ability to help educate others.  If you think this post has merit, please share to help spread the message.

I realize some of you may vehemently disagree with what I’ve said here, and that’s ok.  I always want to hear what you think of my posts regardless, so please take a moment to comment and share your thoughts.

Amazing Exotic Animal Behaviors – How Affection-based Training Works

The old adage “you can lead an animal to water, but you can’t make him drink” was definitely coined by someone who knew nothing about affection-based animal training. If that person had known about and had applied the principles of training animals based upon affection and relationship-building strategies, the phrase most probably would not even exist.

Let’s begin by exploring the basis of training exotic animals, which is called operant conditioning. This primary training strategy lays the foundation upon which the principles of affection-based training are built. Through operant conditioning, exotic animals learn from their own behaviors as they are relevant to the environments in which they exist. The probability that a specific animal behavior either increases or decreases is directly proportionate to the consequences the animal experiences. In other words, positive results produce positive behaviors in exotic animals, resulting in the increased chances that such behavior will be repeated.

It is amazing how similar affection-based training in exotic animals compares to the same techniques when applied to human beings. For instance, a child who brings home a fantastic report card simply because he chose to apply himself at school is likely to continue making high marks when he receives recognition and praise from his parents. If the same child’s parents pay no attention to his accomplishments at school, it is exceedingly likely that the child’s enthusiasm for a job well done will be significantly, if not completely diminished. The child’s attitude quickly changes to a “why bother?” mindset.

Exotic animals respond precisely the same way … no praise, no motivation to repeat the positive behavior. Without a favorable outcome, the animal is far less likely to duplicate the positive, desired behavior.

Acclimating Exotic Animals to New Environments

Building a strong relationship with an exotic animal should begin in the earliest possible stage of the animal’s life. Whether you have a young tiger cub, a newborn brown bear, a baby elephant or any other exotic animal, it is essential that the animal becomes acclimated and is comfortable with the human voice and the human touch. Begin with bottle-feeding and raise the animal as part of your family, much as you would a new baby. As the animal grows, so does the relationship, with the animal accepting you as a part of its tribe.

Again, this part of the exotic animal training experience is intriguingly like that of the human experience. Consider the situation in which a new employee comes on board as the result of her company’s being acquired by your company. If the new employee is treated with a “hands-off” attitude, it is highly probable that her potential for high performance on the job will never be realized. However, if she is warmly received, treated with respect and given credit for what she brings to the table, it is extremely likely that she will perform well in her new business environment and be a valued member of your team.

Positive Reinforcement in Training Exotic Animals

It is a given that exotic animals respond to experiences they perceive as physical. In other words, a tiger will perform as desired if it receives a positive response in the form of an experience it can feel, hear, see or taste. These forms of reinforcement are primary and tangible, providing the tiger with a stimulus, whether in the form of a rub down, voiced praise, food or even opportunities for mating.

A perfect and amazing example of how training exotic animals with positive reinforcement generates desired behavior can also be witnessed by observing the results in humans when they are likewise provided their respective stimuli. Think back to your younger days when you and your classmates each received a case of chocolates to sell in order to raise money for your school. What could possibly motivate kids to give up riding their bikes and playing ball after school to go door-to-door trying to sell candy? Simple, it was the promise of an ice-cream party for the class who sold the most.

Another technique for training exotic animals to exhibit and repeat positive behavior involves using conditioned reinforcement. This form of reinforcement is not routine or involuntary, but rather is learned. Your exotic animal will learn over a period of time and through repetition that if she performs the appropriate and desired behavior that she will earn a hearty “Good Girl” and a well-deserved back rug.

For an idea of how conditioned reinforcement works in training exotic animals, consider a truly exotic species we call the human teenager. He will most probably move slowly each morning the first week of his new summer job. However, once he earns his first paycheck, he is more likely than not to have a little spring in his step the second week. He has learned firsthand, and much to his delight, that going to work equals a paycheck, which is his stimulus. Likewise, if the top annual producer on your sales staff is recognized with an “all expenses paid” golf trip, it is a sure bet that he will be an amazing go-getter next year and put forth his best efforts towards achieving the same reward.

Regardless of the species of exotic animal with which you are working, a strategically devised training plan that incorporates elements of both primary reinforcement and conditional reinforcement ensures you the best possible outcome in achieving desired results with your animal. Relationships that are established and fostered early on in which the animal is nurtured intensely enable you to become the leader rather than trying to assume the role as master, which inevitably leads to frustration for both you and your animal.

Achieve amazing results in exotic animal training by putting relationship-building, affection-based training concepts to work for you today. This technique ensures optimum results every time. Both you and your exotic animal deserve the best possible opportunity for success, and hands-down, these principles of animal training are the stepping stones upon which you can achieve the success you each deserve.

Five Dog art and pet portrait styles

With many people opting to get more than digital photos commissioned for their beloved furry friends, pop art styles for pet portraits are becoming increasingly common. In this article, we bring forth a few such styles of dog art and pet portraits that are common today. If you too are thinking on getting such portraits commissioned, these ideas can be of great help.

Sketch Style

Ever-in-fashion, the sketch style of portraits can look fantastic. However, the difficulty in this style is getting your dog(s) or other pets to pose straight long enough for the artist. Digital tools are thus of great help and can convert digital photos to sketch style of art easily. Moreover, you even have the choice of background and sketch colour.

Warhol pet portraits

If you thought that Andy Warhol prints are just for celebrities, then your pet is definitely one. Using this style, digital artists convert digital photos of your pet into the Warhol style. Bright colours and backgrounds reflecting your pet’s persona are used too. If you are planning to opt for this style, do not forget to check out the Andy Warhol panels. Each portrait can have two or more panels with the same or different photos of your pet. Your moments with the dog can also be captured attractively in this style.

Patch collage style

Another popular style that looks great for pet portraits is the patch collage style. Swatches of different colours, textures, prints, plains, texts or designs are put together to create the image here. The most attractive part of this style is its play with colour and the balance in the variety.

Pet collage

If you have more than a few pictures of your pet, you can put them together in the form of a collage too. This is a great pet portrait idea when you want to compile the various memories you share together. All placed on a common portrait are a great way to help you recollect memories, without having to flip pictures on an album. Collage options in pop art are varied and you can decide between body shape collages, two colour styles, crystallized and other variations.

Monochromatic styles

Black and white portraits look great whatever the subject maybe. And that is the precise reason why many people today commission pet portraits in monochromatic colours. With a little creativity, tone changes and single colour highlights, alluring combinations of monochromatic styles can be obtained too.

The above mentioned five styles are some of the great ways of creating pet portraits. But these are not limited options. Each of these styles come with variations that make for great looks. Also, many other styles, not discussed here exist too. You may want to look at scanner darkly, silhouette, Piet Mondrian collage and Bilal styles too. Whatever pop art variation you use for creating a pet portrait, ensure that it reflects your pet’s persona. The bright colours of Warhol change to match your dog while an Enki Bilal inspiration is great for getting through a serious look.
